World History Teacher - Mr. Hurlburt
New information will be added to the top of this page; the only exception will be upcoming events and dates, which will be listed in a section below.
No reason to wait! There is a document under downloads named "2nd Semester Exam Review" that we will be working through this month and next. It covers chapters 7 - 12, and 16. Every student will get a hard copy, and we will work on it in class. Help our students hang on to this packet; it will be a great way to help review for the semester exam, scheduled for Friday, June 1, 2012. Let me know if you have trouble opening it.
Welcome to my class home page! This year will be great and we have a great team of administrators, counselors, staff, and teachers, all ready to make your student's transition to middle school painless. The 6th Grade Team is loaded with experienced and dedicated teachers who know how to make learning fun. We will get off to a fast start in World History - so be sure to keep up with your student's progress on Parent Assistant.
Welcome to Alice B. Landrum Middle School! Hope everyone had a safe and fun summer. Things will seem really different at first, but you will get used to things by the end of the first week. Always remember, every adult in the building can help you find your way around, so ask someone if you get lost. Keep in mind that you are now in middle school, and you will have more freedom and responsibility. The expectations are that you will work hard and treat everyone with dignity and respect. Let's make this a great year - I promise you that if we all do our best, it will be a year to remember!
The class links in the upper left corner will help you navigate through this website. I will list upcoming important dates for interims, report cards, school functions, and holidays, in a list below.
Homework postings are of particular importance! I will list the week's work on this tab, and will also have it posted on the white board in my room. Most work is started in class, but students will be required to complete unfinished work and read at home. I will always post class assignments, homework, quizzes, tests, and long-term projects, in advance. So there is no confusion, the work listed as "homework" is what we will try to accomplish, each day. For instance, if it says "read Chapter 1, Section 1 and write down vocabulary and definitions" for Wednesday, that is what we will do in class. Students should be familiar with the assignment before class, and should have read the appropriate section, in the book.
Sometimes, we won't finish, and unfinished work becomes homework. There will be other homework on occasion, and I'll list this on the board, in the room.
Starting with the new school year, I will expect all students to have a three-prong pocket folder, filled with lined paper, or they may use a 1/2" three-ring binder, filled with lined paper. The folder/binder should be used exclusively for World History. Students should also be prepared each day with pen/pencil and completed homework. I will conduct regular folder/binder checks for completed warm-ups, classwork, vocabulary, etc., and this will count as part of the classroom participation grade.
We will also have a "zero tolerance" policy on talking and/or looking at another student's paper during quizzes and tests. We do not want this to become a habit, and if I determine that a student is violating either rule, there will be consequences. If a student is looking at another student's work, I'll collect the paper and assign a grade of "0", and send the paper home for a parent signature. If a student is seen talking during a quiz or test, the score on the assignment will be dropped one letter grade.
We also need to get our students in the habit of doing their own work, and not falling into the trap of plagiarizing. Help your students to do their own work when I assign writing or research projects. Thanks for your help and assistance with this.
You can now see your student's academic progress on-line. The site is called eSIS Parent Assistant, and you will need a user name and password, in order to gain access. User names and passwords can be obtained in person from the Landrum Guidance Office. The site itself can be reached by a link from the main Landrum website.

The text can be accessed by going to downloads and using the "Internet Shortcut" link. The user name is: jat2005, and the password is: 8hu5rust. It is a huge file, and a little hard to use, but, in addition to the book, there are good student resources, like quizzes and vocabulary flashcards.
